The Problem
Wood-boring beetles (borer) are a significant threat to NZ homes, particularly older properties with untreated timber. The native borer (Anobium punctatum) and two-tooth borer (Ambeodontus tristis) tunnel through timber framing, flooring, and furniture, weakening structural integrity over years. Adult beetles emerge in spring and summer, leaving small flight holes. By the time holes are visible, larvae may have been feeding inside the timber for 2–5 years.
Signs of Infestation
- Small round flight holes (1–3mm) in timber surfaces
- Fine powdery sawdust (frass) below holes or on surfaces
- Weakened or crumbly timber when probed
- Adult beetles found on windowsills in spring/summer
- Blistering or peeling paint over infested timber
